McKee Fehl have completed a number of extremely fast-track conversions of office buildings into student accommodation since 2010. Now known as Joan Stevens Hall, 132 The Terrace was the first of these projects. Working in conjunction with Victoria University of Wellington, McKee Fehl converted the 12 storey office building was redeveloped into a student accommodation block over a matter of months in time for the 2011 academic year.
McKee Fehl completed the detailed design concurrently with the build in order to achieve the short programme required for the build. The work was completed over a four month period, commencing whilst some tenants remained. This required a high level of planning and management with work being carried out on all levels at one time. McKee Fehl committed a large number of experienced staff and owned plant to achieve this build. Including a full external hoist, a large amount of temporary lighting, mobile scaffold, and electrical lifeguard and sub mains system.
The project included the complete strip out of the existing fit-outs, ceilings and services and conversion into a facility for 242 students. This required new mechanical plant, street water connection, main switchboard, services risers and reticulation systems to suit the new requirements. The ground floor conversion included the installation of a full commercial kitchen to cater for the students.
The build was completed within the extremely short programme without compromise on construction or health and safety. The building continues to be a popular choice for first-year students.
