Rankine Brown Building Victoria University $7m
Project Manager: Maurice Clarke
Site Manager: Nick Samson
Quantity Surveyor: David Sykes
This project involved the seismic upgrade to a 10 storey University library building by the installation of rubber bearings into the base of the 16 main columns. This required the complete disconnection of the building from its existing foundation, with each column carrying up to 900 tonnes.
In 2004 McKee Fehl was awarded the NZIOB Award For Excellence in the Innovation Category for this extremely challenging engineering project.
The project required extensive excavation and lateral support of two levels underneath the existing structure. All of this work was carried out whilst the university library continued to operate in the levels above.
