2014: Coastlands Shoppingtown, $16m

Coastlands Shoppingtown, Paraparaumu

Project Manager: Matt Fraser

Site Manager: Barry Martin

Coastlands Shoppingtown is one of New Zealand’s earliest established shopping malls. Located along State Highway 1 in central Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast, Coastlands offers a range of high street, boutique shopping along with bulk retailers.

McKee Fehl has redeveloped, renovated and extended the centre as the main contractor since 2009, starting with the construction of a completely new main entry to the Ngahina Arcade which influenced a redirection of foot traffic flow for the entire shopping centre.  The work has been carried out on a staged basis following an initial tender process. With the shopping centre open 7 days a week, all construction works have been carried out with careful planning and communication. Business continuity for Coastlands has been a key factor in this redevelopment process along with ensuring the safety and security of the site and members of the public throughout the works. This  has required close co-operation by McKee Fehl with mall management and tenants.  Careful co-ordination with relocating tenants has ensured a successful transition into newly fitted out tenancies within strict programme targets.

The redevelopments have included  basebuild works for various major tenant fit outs (such as Kathmandu, Cotton On, BNZ, Butlers Café), building extensions to the south side of Ngahina Arcade and the Farmers Building, a new expanded Foodcourt  and redevelopment of the existing out-dated cinema complex. It has also included the construction and fit outs of two new amenities blocks inside the mall and a new building for Briscoes Homeware  at the southern end of the complex.

The various stages have incorporated many challenges due to the nature and age of the various parts of the existing buildings. Work has involved complex elements such as construction over and above the existing stream, piling within the existing buildings and the connection to & reconfiguration of existing structures and services.  McKee Fehl has managed a programme of changing traffic routes, redirection of pedestrians and traffic as old entries are closed and new ones opened, and work within noise constraints during store trading hours, all whilst the mall remained operational with members of the public of all ages in close proximity of our sites.

The large amount of communication between McKee Fehl, the design teams and Coastlands management has ensured that each project has been successfully achieved within set budgets and programme targets.
